The Prothena team has extensive experience in discovering and developing novel antibody based therapeutics. Prothena has also assembled a globally recognized Scientific Advisory Board with a broad spectrum of academic and industry experience in the fields of neuroscience and immunotherapy.
MANAGEMENT TEAMDale Schenk, PhD Dr. Dale Schenk, Chief Executive Officer of Prothena, was most recently Chief Scientific Officer and Executive Vice President at Elan Pharmaceuticals where he provided the leadership and scientific direction for Elan’s research and development programs. Prior to joining Elan, Dr. Schenk was a founding scientist of Athena Neurosciences which was acquired by Elan Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Schenk has pioneered the immunotherapeutic approach for the treatment of amyloidosis, as exemplified for Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Schenk’s work in this area – as well as in early detection, testing and other pathways to the disease – has led to the most advanced potential treatment approaches for Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Schenk earned his BA and PhD in Pharmacology and Physiology from the University of California, San Diego.
Gene Kinney, PhD Dr. Gene Kinney, Head of Research and Development, was most recently Senior Vice President, Pharmacological Sciences at Elan Pharmaceuticals and head of Nonclinical Research at Janssen Alzheimer Immunotherapy R&D. Prior to joining Elan, Dr. Kinney was Senior Director, Head of Central Pharmacology and acting lead for Bioanalytics & Pathology at the Merck Research Laboratories. During his tenure at Merck, Dr. Kinney contributed to the strategic direction and oversight of drug discovery activities and led a number of nonclinical discovery and clinical development programs targeted for the treatment of neurodegenerative (e.g., Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease) and psychiatric conditions (e.g., schizophrenia and depression). Dr. Kinney has also held positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb and was an Assistant Professor at the Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Kinney earned his BA from Bloomsburg University and his MA and PhD from Florida Atlantic University.
Tara Nickerson, PhD, MBA Dr. Nickerson, Head of Corporate and Business Development of Prothena, was most recently Vice President and Head of Business Development at Elan Pharmaceuticals. During her tenure at Elan, Dr. Nickerson was responsible for opportunity evaluation, diligence, negotiations and contracting for Elan external opportunities. Dr. Nickerson established a broad network of collaborations for Elan with academic investigators, not-for-profit disease-focused foundations and industry collaborators. She has led efforts to build Elan’s pipeline of products for neurodegenerative disease, including license of ELND005 currently in phase 2 clinical trials for bipolar disorder and agitation and aggression in Alzheimer’s disease. She was instrumental in establishing Neotope Biosciences and served as Head of Business Operations for Neotope from 2010-2012. Dr. Nickerson previously was a Senior Scientist at Celera Genomics (Axys Pharmaceuticals) from February 2000 to August 2002 where she led preclinical programs developing novel small molecule based therapeutics for oncology. Dr. Nickerson earned her BSc and PhD in Experimental Medicine from McGill University and her MBA from the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business.
Tran Nguyen Tran Nguyen has 15 years of finance experience in the
healthcare, banking and private equity industries. Prior to joining
Prothena, he held management positions at Somaxon Pharmaceuticals, Inc.,
including Senior Vice President, Vice President, Chief Financial Officer,
and
Investor Relations, until its sale in 2013. Previously, Mr. Nguyen was
Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Investor Relations at Metabasis
Therapeutics, Inc., until its sale in 2010. Before entering the
biotech industry, Mr. Nguyen was a vice president in the Healthcare
Investment
Banking group at Citi Global Markets, Inc., and served in healthcare
investment
banking at Lehman Brothers, Inc. Mr. Nguyen has a BA from Claremont
McKenna College and an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management.
Martin Koller, MD Martin Koller, MD is a board-certified neurologist with more
than 20 years of experience in the life sciences industry, developing
small molecules and biologic therapeutics for a diverse array of
indications.
Prior to joining Prothena, Dr. Koller served as Chief Medical Officer at
Sonexa
Therapeutics. Previously, Dr. Koller held clinical development roles and
leadership positions at life sciences companies including Athena
Neurosciences, Elan Pharmaceuticals, Syntex Pharmaceuticals and Wyeth
Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Koller has extensive expertise in clinical trial
design,
having been involved in the clinical development of numerous INDs and NDAs
targeting a broad array of indications, including Alzheimer's
disease, multiple sclerosis, cervical dystonia, pain, epilepsy, migraine,
stroke, anxiety, and depression. Dr. Koller has a BA from Franklin and
Marshall
College, an MPH with an emphasis in epidemiology from the University of
Texas
at Houston and his MD from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dr.
Koller completed fellowship training in neuromuscular diseases at the
University of Southern California.
BOARD OF DIRECTORSLars Ekman, MD, PhD Dr. Lars Ekman is an Executive Partner at Sofinnova Ventures and is currently serving on the board of directors for Elan Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Ekman previously held the position of executive vice president and president, global R&D at Elan. Prior to joining Elan, Dr. Ekman was executive vice president, R&D, at Schwarz Pharma AG since 1997. From 1984 to 1997, Dr. Ekman was employed in a variety of senior scientific and clinical functions at Pharmacia (now Pfizer). Dr. Ekman is a board certified surgeon with a PhD in experimental biology and has held several clinical and academic positions in both the United States and Europe. He serves as an executive partner to Sofinnova Ventures and as an advisor to Warburg Pincus. He is a director of Amarin Corporation, plc., Cebix Incorporated, InterMune, Inc., Ocera Inc and chairman of the board of Protox Therapeutics Inc. Dr. Ekman earned his PhD and MD from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Richard T. Collier Richard T. Collier is currently an Adjunct Professor of Law at The Temple University Beasley School of Law in Philadelphia, where he has taught Drug and Medical Device Law since 2004. He has nearly twenty-five years experience in executive positions in the global pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Among other positions, Mr. Collier served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel in three publicly-traded global pharmaceutical companies - Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Inc.; Pharmacia & Upjohn Company; and, Pharmacia Corporation. Most recently, Mr. Collier served as Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Elan Corporation, plc. Prior to his corporate career, Mr. Collier was in the private practice of law at two leading Philadelphia-based law firms and served with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Department of Justice in Philadelphia. Mr. Collier earned both his undergraduate (B.A.) and law degrees (J.D.) at Temple University in Philadelphia.
Shane Cooke Shane Cooke is President of Alkermes plc (NASDAQ: ALKS), where he oversees corporate finance, commercial operations, sales and marketing, human resources, business development, corporate planning and manufacturing operations. Mr. Cooke joined Alkermes plc as President upon completion of the merger between Elan Drug Technologies and Alkermes, Inc. in 2011. Mr. Cooke was President of Élan Drug Technologies from 2007 through the merger in 2011. Mr Cooke served concurrently as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Elan Corporation, plc (NYSE: ELN) from 2001 to 2011 and was a member of the board of directors of Elan from 2005 to 2011. Prior to joining Elan, Mr. Cooke was Chief Executive of Pembroke Capital Limited, an aviation leasing company of which he was a founder. Mr. Cooke is a chartered accountant and a graduate of University College Dublin, Ireland.
Christopher S. Henney, PhD, DSc Christopher S. Henney, PhD, DSc is the chairman of the board of directors of Oncothyreon, Inc., and of Anthera Pharmaceuticals, Inc., both biotechnology companies. He is a vice-chairman of the board of directors of Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. From 1995 until his retirement in 2004, Dr. Henney was chairman and chief executive officer of Dendreon Corporation, a publicly traded biotechnology company that he co-founded. Dr. Henney was also a co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Immunex Corporation and of ICOS Corporation, both publicly traded biotechnology companies. Dr. Henney received a PhD in experimental pathology from the University of Birmingham, England, where he also obtained his DSc for contributions in the field of immunology.
SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY BOARDAdriano Aguzzi, MD, PhD Adriano Aguzzi is a Professor and Director of the Institute of Neuropathology at the University Hospital of Zurich. Dr. Aguzzi is a Founder and Director of the Swiss National Center for Prion Diseases and a former Governor of the Swiss Federal School of Technology. His research is focused on the damaging effects of prions on brain cells and the mechanisms of neurodegenerative disease progression. His research has resulted in more than 400 publications which were cited more than 20,000 times by other researchers. Dr. Aguzzi earned his MD at the University of Freiburg, and holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Bologna (I), Teramo (I), and Liege (I). His work was recognized inter alia by the Marcel-Benoist Prize, the Robert-Koch Prize, and the Antonio-Feltrinelli Award, which are among the highest recognitions in Switzerland, Germany, and Italy respectively. Dr. Aguzzi is the holder of an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council (ERC).
Floyd E. Bloom, MD Floyd Bloom is the Executive Director of Science Communication and Professor Emeritus in the Molecular and Integrative Neurosciences Department at The Scripps Research Institute. Dr. Bloom is a founder and serves as a Director at Alkermes Inc. He was also a former president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society for Neuroscience and the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology. He has been actively researching the mechanisms by which drugs affect brain functions. Dr. Bloom has published more than 600 publications relating to his research in neuroscience. Dr. Bloom earned his MD from Washington University, St. Louis School of Medicine.
Neil Cashman, MD Neil Cashman is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in the Brain Research Center at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Cashman holds the position of Scientific Director at PrioNet Canada, a Network of Centres of Excellence for research into prions and prion diseases. Dr. Cashman is also founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Amorfix Life Sciences. He is globally recognized as one of the pioneers in the field of prion biology and protein misfolding diseases. Dr. Cashman earned his MD at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
George Siber, MD George Siber is the Executive Chairman of Genocea Biosciences. Dr. Siber has previously held the position of Chief Scientific Officer and Executive Vice President of Wyeth Vaccines. While at Wyeth, Dr. Siber oversaw the development and approval of three vaccines with multi-billion dollar revenues: an acellular pertussis vaccine, Acel-Immune®; a meningococcal meningitis vaccine, Meningitec®; and a pneumococcal vaccine, Prevnar®. Prior to Wyeth, he was a Harvard Medical School Associate Professor of Medicine at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Director of the Massachusetts Public Health Biologic Laboratories. Dr. Siber earned his MD at McGill University.
